Best-in-class fuel economy

In its drive to produce cars with class-leading performance, yet lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, BMW has introduced the new BMW 316d Saloon and the new BMW X3xDrive18d. Both models feature a raft of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, enabling them to achieve lower CO2 emissions, higher fuel economy and better performance.

Available from September 2009, the new BMW 316d ES Saloon offers the best-in-class handling and driving dynamics for which the BMW 3 Series is renowned, yet thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics technologies it records a combined fuel consumption of 62.8mpg, a remarkable achievement in an executive saloon. Additionally, it emits a mere 118g/km of CO2 , bringing it into Vehicle Excise Duty Band C. Road tax is therefore just £35 per year, an annual saving of £85 on Band D.

Featuring a 2.0-litre engine tuned for ultimate efficiency (yet capable of reaching 62mph in 10.9 seconds), the new 316d model features the same standard specification as the acclaimed 318d, yet at £22,560 OTR it will cost £820 less.

Meanwhile, with the launch of the new BMW X3xDrive18d, the BMW X3 is now the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive SAV available. With EfficientDynamics technologies such as Active Aerodynamics, which controls engine air intake to improve aerodynamics and reduce friction, the new model combines all the strengths of the X3 family - intelligent xDrive technology, class-leading driving dynamics, toughness and practicality - with even higher fuel economy.

Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, delivering an ample 143hp, the xDrive18d accelerates from a standstill to 62mph in a punchy10.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 121mph. However combined fuel consumption is 45.6mpg, with CO2 emissions of 165 g/km.
